POLOKWANE – One person has been arrested in connection with a robbery in the Polokwane CBD on Monday (March 27)
A video of the brazen robbery by a group of six unknown men surfaced on social media.
The video, taken outside a butchery in President Paul Kruger Street shows the victim handing his goods in for safe keeping before he is grabbed around the neck by one of the men.
The men, who are all seen wearing face masks to hide their identities, take the victim’s wallet and cellphone and search for other valuable goods on his person before throwing him to the ground and walk away.
Surrounding shoppers are seen looking on in disbelief as the victim gets up off the ground and moves back to the security counter.
It is said the men are part of the notorious Kgamas gang who are known to operate in the CBD.
The Seshego Community against Crime and Gangsterism member Vincent Kunutu said the suspect has pointed out other members of the gang who reside in Mokopane, Ga-Mashashane and Tzaneen.
The men are said to come to the CBD and surveil the area for prospective victims.
Kunutu has called on businesses to provide security outside their premises for customers.
“That person was robbed at the parcel counter, where was security to help him? We cannot only want customers’ money but not guarantee their safety,” he said.
Comment from the police was not received at the time of publishing.
