Diesel generators handed over to hospitals in Limpopo
Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba said the generators will be distributed to various hospitals across the province only if their current generator has exhausted its lifespan or if it needs to be repaired.
POLOKWANE – With the ongoing load-shedding in South Africa, hospitals across the province were faced with electricity issues, which disrupted operations and placed the lives of many patients at risk.
Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba handed over 11 back-up diesel generators at the Department of Health on March 23. While waiting for the delivery of eight more generators, making it a total of 19 generators. These generators aim to decrease the effects of load-shedding in hospitals.
“The standby generators ensure continuity of electricity supply to areas where discontinuity or failure of supply can cause danger to life,” said Mangolo Masenya, chief mechanical engineer at the department.
Ramathuba highlighted that these generators will be distributed to various hospitals across the province, but only if their current generator has exhausted its lifespan or if it needs to be repaired.
Dr CN Phatudi Hospital received one generator on Sunday, this comes after their generator has exhausted its lifespan, as well as the Seshego Pharmaceutical depot.
“One of the generators was dispatched to the pharmaceutical depot, where we had a challenge with the existing generator and we are storing medicines and vaccines that require continuous monitoring of temperature,” said Ramathuba.
Mokopane Hospital and FH Odendaal Hospital will also receive their generators as well and those generators will also be permanently installed at those hospitals.
Ramathuba added that the department is ready to face load-shedding.
