Tavern owner donates food to 19 families in Greenside
Tavern owner Justice Chauke said he depends on the community for business and that it was only fair to help them in return.
POLOKWANE – Nineteen families in Greenside Ext 44 were overjoyed to receive food parcels from a tavern owner, Justice Chauke, on March 13.
The 32-year-old businessman owns Konka Tavern, and says some of his customers ask for financial assistance every now and then.
“Some of my customers and fellow residents would ask me to lend them money, and when I asked them why, they always said it was so they could buy maize meal,” the business owner said.
He was left wondering if he will be able to help more people in his community by providing them with food parcels, rather than by lending them money that they might not be able to repay.
He then asked the councillor of Ext 44 on how he can assist families which are in need of groceries.
“It’s not the first time I am giving families a bag of maize meal and packs of tinned fish. I have done it before but this time I decided to not be selective. I went to the ward councillor who referred me to our ward committee to give me a list of families who are in need of food parcels.”
He said that at first, he had intended to assist 15 households, but after receiving the list, he discovered that 19 families were identified by the ward committee to be in need of food donations.
“As a businessman, I depend on my community who are the ones that support me so it’s only fair that I help out where I can.”
The families who received the food parcels are mostly child-headed families.
Chauke says he wishes to help more families whenever he can, and advice that it’s important to know and live with a budget and set priorities for necessities and wants.
