POLOKWANE – With graduation season is upon us and many graduates took to social media to share their academic achievements. However, obtaining the qualification comes with a lot of pressure.
The Polokwane Observer asked new graduates about the challenges they have faced and how they overcame them, while others advised aspiring students to study the same course as them.
Xolani Mhlanga (Bsc Geology; University of Limpopo) – I lost my brother prior to my final year and he was a source of motivation and inspiration from the onset of my academic journey. This was one of the difficult situations I had to deal with as it really affected me. I had to use my hurt as a source of motivation and whenever I remembered him, I would bury my head in a book with tears in my eyes. My advice is no matter the obstacles you may come across as a student, never throw in the towel but always kneel down to the Alrighty and ask for strength. He will show up for you and will never disappoint. (Philippians 4:13).Nthabeleng Lamola (Media Studies; University of Limpopo) – You need to be an active student and fall in love with your course if you want to pass. Try by all means to look for practical experience in companies like job-shadowing, internships, or volunteering.Isabella Makhura (Law; University of Limpopo) – Covid-19 was a challenge to me, academically, as we had to move from normal day to day classes to online classes. Even though attending online was a bit of a challenge, I had no choice but to find an alternative way of dealing with pressure. I then decided to find a mentor and I paid him from my pocket and consulted more often with my lecturers.Herman Moloi (Journalism; Tshwane University of Technology) – I advise people who want to study journalism to go for it as it does not limit you. You cover every topic, which then leads into you finding your weaknesses and strength. In addition, if you want to be a great journalist, studying very hard should be part of your daily routine.Tebogo Ngwayile (Media Studies) – To someone who wants to study media studies, do it and do not listen to people because they know nothing about you. Always pray for guidance and strength to study and be who you want to be. The media industry is too broad.
