POLOKWANE – After not being able to follow her dream career as a social worker for some time, Natalie Southon now has a permanent position at the Polokwane Child and Family Welfare society.

Natalie is a native of Polokwane and completed her Gr 12 at Westenburg Secondary School. After completing her degree at the University of Limpopo she did her internship at Rethabile Clinic under the Department of Social Development.

“Back then I had a very positive outlook and hoped for a permanent position. After about three months at home I relocated to Johannesburg. Work in the social work field is few and far between and it was only in 2016 that I was appointed for a part time position. I counselled at a private practice on weekends and enjoyed it very much.”

While she was temporarily appointed, Natalie continued searching for a full time position. Her continuous search and refusal to give up landed her her current social worker position.

“I am glad I did not give up on my dream. This is my passion and I learn a lot. It feels like a second chance.”

Natalie loves one-on-one sessions and to help people work through their problems.

“I like to work with children as they are the leaders of tomorrow. I do not like it when a person labels a child with words. I will always advocate for children.”

She admits a social worker needs to work in partnership with the police, psychologists, magistrates and teachers as children often spend most of their time with their teachers.

“I believe this is a spiritual job and every time I have to see a client I pray for them and for insight. We need God in our jobs. You also need to be patient and have good listening skills and understanding of people.”
