Limpopo records four new cases of cholera

The Capricorn District Municipality is working closely with the provincial Department of Health to monitor the number of cases recorded in the province.

LIMPOPO – Four cholera cases have been confirmed in the Capricorn District, three in Blouberg and one in Polokwane, the Limpopo Department of Health confirmed.

Health spokesperson Neil Shikwambana said the department is working with the Capricorn municipality and continues to test and monitor its water sources, to ensure that all residents are less vulnerable to infection, but the challenge lies in sanitation and hygiene.

Shikwambana said the department urges residents to take precautions, and practise good hygiene by washing their hands with water and soap after using the bathroom, and when preparing or eating food, also thoroughly washing their fruits and vegetables.

Residents and visitors are also urged to visit their nearest health facility when they show symptoms, such as watery diarrhoea and dehydration.

According to Shikwambana the infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
