GAAL brags with four new board members

Transport MEC Florence Radzilani, said the new appointees have the responsibility to bring the much-needed impetus to the oversight function of the entity.

POLOKWANE – The addition of four members to the Board of Directors to Gateway Airports Authority Limited (GAAL) is part of the turnaround efforts of this provincial transport agency.

This is according to Transport MEC Florence Radzilani, who said the new members were highly qualified. They were appointed earlier this month.

The entity has operated without a full complement board as a result of resignations in the recent past and this has stifled its oversight function, as there were not adequate numbers to formulate strategic committees critical for its optimal functioning.

The Polokwane Airport was also downgraded to a category two airport in 2020 after the SA Civil Aviation Authority found it could not provide the minimum level emergency services required to maintain their aerodrome licence at the time.

Recently appointed CEO, Mokgadi Matli in December told Polokwane Observer that several turnaround strategies to improve the service to meet the set criteria were reaching implementation stages, although the allocated budget from Treasury was not sufficient.

“The new appointees have the responsibility to bring the much-needed impetus to the oversight function of the entity,” the MEC said at the time.

Among others, they are expected to formulate strategies that will generate revenue.
