Endless queues at LTT Memorial Hospital frustrates patients

According to multiple reports, it is common for individuals to wait over six hours, sometimes the entire day, without receiving treatment.

LIMPOPO – Patients at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital continue to suffer from long queues and inadequate medical attention, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.

According to multiple reports from patients and community members, it is common for individuals to wait over six hours, sometimes the entire day, without receiving treatment.

Idah Mutele, a patient, spoke to CV about the adverse effects of these waiting times, including longer hospital stays, higher mortality rates, and increased pressure on the already overburdened staff.

She noted that patients from the Sinthumule and Kutama area, and Tshikota township often arrive at the hospital early in the morning but leave at sunset without being attended to, or they are forced to return the next day.

Another patient, who wished to remain anonymous, shared a similar experience of standing in line for over 10 hours before receiving treatment. Samuel Mukhathedzwa, a 62-year-old man, described the harsh conditions of waiting outside in the cold, only to sometimes leave without assistance.

β€œIt is not nice to be outside the hospital in cold weather. Some of us might not even get assistance. This has been happening for a very long time in the hospital without any form of improvement. My health was compromised. I was physically and emotionally drained,” he said.

During a visit by CV, patients were observed standing in unbearable queues, with many expressing their frustration over the lack of timely medical attention. The hospital’s poor service is a significant concern, particularly for those with chronic conditions and the elderly.

Neil Shikwambane, the spokesperson for the Department of Health, explained that the hospital serves a population of 516 031 people and is supported by five feeder clinics. He noted that many patients choose to visit the hospital for services available at local clinics, contributing to overcrowding.

Shikwambane mentioned that efforts were made on May 9 to inform the community about the challenges faced by the hospital and potential solutions during a meeting at the Sinthumule Tribal office, with plans to visit the Kutama Tribal office soon.

He added that patients not adhering to scheduled visit dates exacerbates the queues.

He assured that the department is addressing the issue of staff shortages by implementing a shift-work system to better distribute staff according to daily needs.

Despite these explanations and ongoing efforts, the immediate experience for patients at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital remains dire, with many still facing long waits and insufficient medical care.
