VIDEO: Limpopo police in hot water over use of siren

Two police officers are under investigation for sounding their vehicle's siren after accepting a drink from a hawker in Musina.

LIMPOPO – The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has directed the district commissioner of Vhembe, Major General Eddie van der Walt to carry out a thorough investigation into a viral TikTok video of two police officers’ conduct.

In the video, a SAPS vehicle can be seen parked closely next to a bakkie in Musina when a local hawker offers the officers a brown drink from a 5l bottle.

The officer in the passenger seat accepts the drink, drinks it and hands the empty cup to the hawker who then pours a glass for the driver.

The hawker is then heard asking the officers to sound the vehicle’s siren of which they do for a couple of seconds before driving away.

The hawker walks away in excitement as a group of onlookers observe.

Hadebe has asked for the investigation to ensure that appropriate action is taken against the members involved in line with the SAPS Discipline Regulations and Code of Conduct.

“The provincial police commissioner has noted with concern the police officials alleged conduct as seen in a video circulating on various social media platforms. The video showcased the police officials allegedly from Vhembe district participating in a marketing campaign of a hawker by utilising a SAPS marked vehicle and siren,” police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said.

According to the SAPS’ discipline regulations, an officer will be guilty of misconduct if he or she contravenes any prescribed Code of Conduct of the Service or the Public Service, whichever may be applicable to him or her.

The SAPS Code of Conduct states that officers will undertake to ‘utilise all the available resources responsibly, efficiently and cost-effectively to maximise their use,’ among others.
