Charges dropped against Jossey Buthane

The charges stemmed from a violent clash between ANC and EFF members in Juju Valley during a campaign visit ahead of this year's election in May.

POLOKWANE – Former EFF Limpopo chairperson now ANC provincial mobilising and campaign officer, Jossey Buthane, has had an attempted murder charge against him dropped due to insufficient evidence.

The announcement, made earlier this month, follows his return to the ANC shortly before the recent general elections.

The charges stemmed from a violent clash between ANC and EFF members in Juju Valley, a historically EFF-dominated informal settlement, during a campaign visit ahead of this year’s election in May.

The altercation escalated into a shootout, leaving a nine-year-old seriously injured and several adults with minor injuries. Buthane was arrested following the incident.

ANC Limpopo secretary, Reuben Madadzhe, announced last Wednesday that the provincial executive committee welcomed the decision to drop the charges.

Speaking to Polokwane Observer, Buthane expressed relief while voicing concerns:

“I knew I was not responsible and I welcome the news. However, I still wonder why the other group did not undergo the same process. I caution politicians not to use police and state resources to play politics.”

Meanwhile, Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that investigations into the shooting that injured the child are ongoing.
