Limpopo woman wins Cultural Best Cooker title

Hlanganiso Mathebula crowned Miss Indoni South Africa Cultural Best Cooker, showcasing Tsonga heritage and culinary skills.

LIMPOPO – Hlanganiso Mathebula from Jerome village in Collins Chabane Municipality, has made her mark on the national stage as the Miss Indoni South Africa Cultural Best Cooker.

Representing the Tsonga Kingdom, she showcased her dedication to cultural preservation and leadership by promoting Tsonga heritage and values through the prestigious Indoni pageant.

Indoni is a cultural competition where representatives from 12 South African kingdoms – including Xhosa, Zulu, Venda, and Tsonga – gather to celebrate and showcase their unique heritage. Mathebula first joined the Indoni pageant in 2020 and was crowned second runner-up for the Tsonga Kingdom. In 2024, her determination led her to claim the title of Indoni Tsonga Queen.

She expressed her joy and pride in representing Tsonga traditions. “This opportunity is a personal dream come true and a way for me to honour and showcase the beauty of my culture, its traditions, and values.”

Her passion for cooking became a highlight of the competition, as she was awarded the title of Cultural Best Cooker. She prepared Tshopi (pumpkin pap), a traditional Tsonga dish, to perfection. For Mathebula, cooking is more than just a skill; it is a way to preserve cultural stories and rituals through food.

She said she was grateful to her family, friends, and her community for their support. “Your encouragement and love have been my guiding light. This journey would not have been possible without your belief in me.”

Mathebula hopes her journey will inspire others to embrace and celebrate their heritage. “I am excited to continue growing through this experience and will forever cherish the memories and lessons that come with it,” she concluded.
