Polokwane dermatologist warns against sleeping with makeup on
Dermatologist Malebo Nkoana warns that sleeping with makeup on can lead to skin issues and offers tips for proper removal and care.
POLOKWANE – Sleeping with makeup on may seem harmless, but it can lead to serious skin problems, especially for those prone to acne.
Dermatologist Malebo Nkoana explains that makeup traps oil, dirt, and bacteria against your skin overnight, creating a breeding ground for breakouts and irritation.
“Leaving makeup on can cause infections. Always make sure to remove it before bed and opt for non-comedogenic products,” advises Nkoana. She also emphasises the importance of removing lipstick to prevent dry, cracked lips.

Tips for proper makeup removal
1. Use gentle, fragrance-free wipes: For a quick and easy solution, choose makeup removal wipes free of fragrances and harsh chemicals.
2. Try micellar water: Micellar water is an excellent option for removing makeup, including waterproof formulas. Nkoana recommends selecting one suited to your skin type for the best results.
3. Double cleanse for thorough removal: A gentle cleanser may not completely remove makeup, so double cleansing can help ensure your skin is clear. Follow up with a nourishing moisturiser to avoid dryness or irritation.
4. Care for your lips: Remove lipstick gently and apply a hydrating lip balm to repair any damage and prevent cracks.
“Regardless of how tired you are, it’s never too late to take care of your skin,” says Nkoana. Prioritising a proper makeup removal routine can help maintain a healthy, radiant complexion and prevent unnecessary skin issues.
