ANC Limpopo dissolves three regional structures
The ANC in Limpopo has dissolved its Vhembe, Mopani, and Peter Mokaba regional structures after they failed to hold conferences on time.
LIMPOPO – The ANC in Limpopo has disbanded three of its regional structures after they failed to hold their regional conferences on time, leading to the expiration of their terms. Vhembe, Mopani and Peter Mokaba regions were officially dissolved on January 22 and must now convene their elective congresses before the end of April.
ANC Limpopo provincial spokesperson Jimmy Machaka confirmed the decision, stating that the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) acted on advice from the National Working Committee (NWC). According to Machaka, all Regional Executive Committees (RECs) whose terms expired in December 2024 have now been converted into Regional Task Teams (RTTs) to oversee party affairs and organise new leadership elections.
Machaka said the PEC will continue to monitor and support the regions as they prepare for their congresses. The RTTs, made up of members from the previous RECs, were appointed because the delays in holding conferences were not due to their own actions.
Among the three regions, the Vhembe regional conference, scheduled for March 8-9, is expected to be one of the most contested in the province. Tshitereke Matibe, the MEC for Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (Ledet), will be competing for chairperson against Simon Mavikane. Sources indicate that Matibe’s faction is backed by the Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba and ANC provincial secretary Vhamusanda Vho Reuben Madadzhe, while Mavikane’s faction enjoys the support of Social Development MEC and ANC provincial deputy chairperson Florence Radzilani.
Both camps have already lined up their preferred candidates for key leadership positions. Matibe’s slate includes Miyelani Chauke as deputy chairperson, Matodzi Ralushai as secretary, Dorcus Mboyi as deputy secretary, and Fistos Mafela as treasurer. Mavikane’s team consists of Samuel Munyai as deputy chairperson, Rudzani Ludere as secretary, Livhuwani Ligaraba as deputy secretary, and Mihloti Muhlophe as treasurer.
