NMS learners embrace the spirt of Hijab Day

Northern Muslim School celebrates World Hijab Day, promoting awareness on the hijab's significance in the Islamic faith.

POLOKWANE – Learners at Northern Muslim School embraced the spirit of World Hijab Day by dressing in modest wear and hijabs on January 31, ahead of the global observance on February 1.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the significance of the hijab, with the girls receiving a motivational talk on its importance in Islamic faith and identity.

Hijab, a religious obligation for Muslim women, symbolises modesty, faith and a strong sense of Islamic heritage. Moulana Shanawaz, head of department at the school, explained that the hijab serves as a means of covering and protecting oneself.

Tasmiyah Anver celebrates Hijab Day by proudly wearing her Hijab.

“The hijab is a spiritual commitment that encourages women to focus on their manners and personality rather than their appearance. It is also a symbol of Islamic identity and a badge of religious heritage,” he said.

He added that wearing the hijab is believed to bring spiritual rewards and blessings.

Polokwane Review asked learners what World Hijab Day means to them, and here’s what they shared:

Faatimah Ebrahim: “Hijab is not just about wearing a scarf; it reflects how we dress, talk, and carry ourselves. It teaches us to embrace modesty in every aspect of life.”
Layya Khan Patel: “I love celebrating Hijab Day because it makes me feel very beautiful. We dress up, and it’s a day filled with fun and joy.”
Asmaa Ravat: “Hijab Day reminds us to be modest, show respect, and protect our bodies. It is an act of kindness and self-respect.”
