Limpopo teen drowns in Muengedzi stream tragedy

Lesedi Monyaloko drowned in Muengedzi stream while swimming with friends. Police urge children to avoid rivers amid safety concerns.

LIMPOPO – A fun-filled afternoon turned tragic when 15-year-old Lesedi Monyaloko, a Gr 9 learner from Tshiungulela High School, drowned while swimming in a stream near Muengedzi in Zamenkomste village last Monday.

After school, a group of young boys walked 7km to Muengedzi stream in the Sand River to escape the heat. Five of them entered the water, but Lesedi was suddenly swept away by strong currents. According to an eyewitness, the other children tried to save him, but the water was deep and murky. Unable to help, they ran back to inform the parents and community members.

The family immediately contacted the police, but by the time officers arrived, it was already dark, and Lesedi was nowhere to be found.

Community members and relatives kept vigil at the stream overnight, hoping for a miracle. Unfortunately, police divers arrived the following day and recovered his body.

Vhembe police spokesperson Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi urged children to avoid swimming in rivers, dams, and streams especially after recent heavy rains have made them dangerous. “With the ongoing heatwave, more children may seek relief in local water sources. We are launching a safety awareness campaign to warn learners about the risks.”

Local councillor Malimavhi Phuluwa echoed the warning, urging parents to be more vigilant. “We will hold a community meeting to inform parents about the dangers and ensure this tragedy does not happen again.”
