Thohoyandou ATM bombings leave residents stranded

ATM bombings have left residents without banking access, forcing them to travel long distances for financial services.

LIMPOPO – Residents of Khubvi and surrounding villages have been left stranded after criminals destroyed all available ATMs, cutting off their access to banking services.

The latest attack took place at a local shopping complex, where robbers blew up the last two remaining ATMs, following a similar spree of four ATM bombings across Vhembe last month.

Vhembe police spokesperson Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the incident, stating that unknown armed suspects ambushed security guards, held them hostage, and detonated explosives to access the machines. It is still unclear whether any money was taken, but the suspects fled the scene on foot without firing any shots.

For many in this rural community, these ATMs were a lifeline, saving them from costly trips to town just to withdraw money.

The destruction has now forced residents, especially social grant recipients, to travel long distances, increasing their financial burden. Community member Samuel Raedani expressed his frustration, saying the incident had left them feeling helpless.

“We are already struggling with poverty. These ATMs were our only access to banking services. Now, people who depend on grants can hardly afford taxi fares to town. This is heartbreaking, and we just hope the police will do something to stop these attacks,” he said.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and urge anyone with information to come forward. Residents can contact their nearest police station, call Crime Stop at 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS App to provide anonymous tips.

Investigations are ongoing, and the community remains hopeful for justice and the restoration of their banking facilities.
