VIDEO: Dalmada residents take DIY approach to fix roads

Dalmada residents filled road ditches with bricks and sand after heavy rains, but the municipality warns DIY fixes could pose safety risks.

POLOKWANE – Just weeks after residents residing on plots along the N1 North took matters into their own hands to fill potholes, the Dalmada community has now followed suit.

With gravel roads affected by heavy rainfall, ditches formed, making many parts of the roads inaccessible to vehicles. In response, residents used bricks, broken tiles, and loose sand to fill the gaps and restore access.

Thipa Selala, spokesperson for the Polokwane Municipality, acknowledged the community’s concerns about the state of Dalmada’s gravel roads.

“We understand the frustration caused by deteriorating road conditions and appreciate the community’s willingness to find solutions,” he said. However, he strongly advised against using materials such as tiles, bricks, and sand for road repairs, as these he said are not suitable for maintaining roads and could create safety hazards for drivers.

Selala said the municipality is actively working on improving road infrastructure.

He urged residents to report issues through the MyPolokwane Citizen App or directly to the municipality, which would allow teams to address problems with the appropriate material.
