Jabez supports young cancer patients

Jabez Christian Academy donates yoghurt to young cancer patients at Pietersburg Provincial Hospital to support recovery.

POLOKWANE – February is Cancer Month and Jabez Christian Academy reached out to the young patients at the Paediatric Oncology ward (TLC) at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital when they donated a consignment of yoghurt for consumption by patients recovering from treatment.

Accepting the donation, TLC volunteers’ leader Samuel Maphosa explained that cancer in children is a common disease, starting at ages between two and 10 years old.

Maphosa explained that chemotherapy kills every growing cell in the body and after finishing chemo, the body will start to reproduce the cells that died. “Hair will grow back, then you will become stronger again and this is when food like yoghurt plays a vital role,” he added.

Maphosa thanked the learners for contributing the yoghurt and his presentation was received with a loud applause.

Jabez principal, Dr Elana Erasmus said that the interaction with the TLC ward is an annual event. “We also arrange visits to the facility to sensitise our learners about the plight of others that are not so blessed and well as we are,” Erasmus said.
