Polokwane to see thunderstorms and possible flooding this week

SAWS warns of thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain throughout the week; residents should remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.

POLOKWANE – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for significant rainfall across parts of the country, including western Limpopo, from Sunday (February 16) to Thursday (February 20). The expected downpours may lead to localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, roads, and bridges.

Polokwane residents should brace for a week of unsettled weather as thunderstorms, heavy rain, and cloudy conditions dominate the forecast due to moist tropical air moving in from Botswana.

The week starts with morning thunderstorms on Monday followed by cloudy skies and a high of 23°C.  By Tuesday, highs of 26°C and brief morning showers are expected before giving way to overcast skies.

Rainfall activity increases on Wednesday with temperatures around 25°C, thick cloud cover, and a higher chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

The stormy conditions persist into Thursday with scattered morning thunderstorms and breezy conditions. Some breaks of sunshine may appear in the afternoon, with a high of 26°C.

On Friday, the temperature will reach 28°C, cloud cover will remain but afternoon thunderstorms will be more scattered.

Saturday brings a temporary break from rain, with mostly cloudy skies and a high of 28°C. Winds will remain light, and the chance of precipitation decreases. By Sunday, showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread, with a high of 27°C and a 77% chance of rain.

SAWS has warned of persistent rain across western Limpopo with rainfall accumulation between 20 to 50 mm and an increased risk of localised flooding. Motorists and pedestrians should exercise caution on slippery roads and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.
