LTT visually impaired sprinter wins international silver

A young sprinter from rural Limpopo defies the odds and overcomes challenges to make his mark on the global stage.

LIMPOPO – From the rural village of Makhitha, the 18-year-old visually impaired Masala Makatu has sprinted onto the international stage, securing a silver medal in the men’s 100m T12 event at the Dubai 2025 Para Athletics Grand Prix on February 11.

This remarkable achievement highlights his athletic prowess and his journey of determination.

Currently a Gr 11 learner at Champion Christian School, Makatu’s talent was first discovered during his time at the Rivoni School for the Blind. He recalls a pivotal moment when teachers sent him on an errand, impressed by his swift return. This led to his introduction to competitive running, where he consistently outpaced his peers.

Makatu said he felt honoured to carry the pride of Limpopo and South Vhembe on his shoulders. Before jetting off to Dubai, he defied all odds to beat his counterparts in the 100m T 12 athletics meetings, and won all the elimination rounds held in Durban and Cape Town in previous years to book his place in the world competition.

Despite facing financial challenges and lacking sponsorships, Makatu remains undeterred. He expresses gratitude for the support he’s received and continues to appeal for assistance to further his athletics career. His silver medal at the Dubai Grand Prix is a testament to his hard work and the support of his community.
