Hawks nab Westenburg officer over stolen firearm linked to murder

A Westenburg police constable has been arrested after the Hawks recovered a stolen firearm belonging to murdered Sergeant killed on February 5.

POLOKWANE – The Hawks in Limpopo have arrested two suspects, including a police constable from the Westenburg Police Station, in connection with a stolen state firearm linked to the murder of Sergeant Modiba.

Sergeant Modiba (37), attached to the Polokwane Provincial Flying Squad, was shot on 5 February 2025 at Staanplaas in the Lebowakgomo policing area. His service pistol, laptops, and cellphones were stolen before the suspect fled in a waiting white bakkie. Modiba was rushed to a medical facility, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Hawks’ regional spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said a sting operation was launched on February 19 in collaboration with the Crimes Against the State Unit and the Limpopo Provincial Crime Scene Management following intelligence about suspects in possession of the firearm and ammunition belonging to the deceased sergeant.

“The operation led investigators to Seshego Zone 5, where the first suspect, allegedly related to the deceased, was arrested. During questioning, the suspect implicated a police constable stationed at the Westenburg Police Station. The constable was subsequently located and taken into custody,” his statement read.

Mmuroa said further interrogation led to the recovery of a Z88 9mm pistol, 32 rounds of ammunition, magazines, and two cartridges.

“The firearm, confirmed through its serial number as the one stolen during the sergeant’s murder, was found wrapped in black plastic and concealed under corrugated iron sheets at the back of a house.”

Both suspects remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court today (February 21) on defeating the ends of justice and possession of a suspected stolen firearm and ammunition charges.

The Hawks provincial head Major General Gopz Govender expressed disappointment over the constable’s involvement.

“It is disappointing to see police officers implicated in criminal activities, especially in a case involving the murder of their colleague. However, this arrest proves that the Hawks conduct investigations without fear, favour, or prejudice,” said Govender.

The Hawks’ investigation is ongoing.
