UL fencers shine at national competition in Gqeberha

Limpopo's young fencers also made their mark. Sebastian Austin and Kgothatjo Ramaboea achieved podium finishes in the u/20 men's category.

POLOKWANE – Fencers from the University of Limpopo showcased their talent at the first national fencing competition of the year in Gqeberha.

The 27-member team competed fiercely, with several athletes improving their national rankings and securing spots on the podium.

The event served as the final qualifier for the Senior African Championships. Rahul van Manen, currently ranked second in epee and foil, earned his place on the national team heading to Nigeria in June.

He delivered an outstanding performance, bringing home a gold and a bronze medal.

Limpopo’s young fencers also made their mark. Sebastian Austin and Kgothatjo Ramaboea achieved podium finishes in the u/20 men’s category.

Kgothatjo’s strong showing elevated him to fourth place in national rankings, securing his eligibility for the national team. “I am very happy as this is my first national medal, and I’m now in the top four for this category,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sebastian impressed by defeating higher-ranked opponents, qualifying him for the Junior African Championships in Angola at the end of February.

In the u/20 women’s foil category, Safiya Khan Patel won a bronze medal. Junior national medallist Jonathan Mathete exited in the quarter-finals. “I am disappointed that I didn’t go further, but this means I must work harder for the next competition.”

The competition also highlighted the rising talent from the Ditlalemeso E Tla Natšo project. Precious Thoka, ranked 10th in the u/17 women’s epee, is on track to break into the top four.

Limpopo Fencing Association chairperson Renuka Ramroop praised the team’s efforts, noting the overall improvement in national rankings and the growing impact of the E Tla Natšo fencers.

“I’m very proud of all the fencers who travelled to Gqeberha to compete in this national open. Fencing is an exciting and growing sport in the province, and we’re thrilled with the results,” she concluded.
