Gr R learners embarked on a fun-filled adventure of stories

Mickey and Minnie Castle School's Gr R learners enjoyed a day of storytelling, library lessons, and museum discoveries.

POLOKWANE – Reading stories to toddlers offers numerous benefits, from expanding their vocabulary and introducing new concepts to sparking their imagination, enhancing social skills, and teaching them about the world.

On Friday, Gr R learners at Mickey and Minnie Castle School enjoyed a special visit from Molebogeng Boloko and Thandi Malatjie from the city library. Boloko explained the library rules and how to become a member.

“The rules are simple: you must be quiet, no running, no eating or drinking, no cutting or stealing books. You can borrow up to five books at a time for a month before returning them,” she shared.

She also introduced the children to different types of books—fiction, non-fiction, and reference materials—and highlighted what the library offers, including books, magazines, newspapers, and internet access. To end her session, she read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to the eager young listeners.

Adding to the day’s learning experience, Tyra Mantlhakga from the city museums spoke about the various museums in Polokwane.

“We have the Polokwane Cultural Historical Museum, also known as the Irish House, the Hugh Exton Photography Museum, the Polokwane Art Museum, and the Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum. These places teach about different cultures, foods, housing, dances, and more. While most museums have rules like no touching, no photos, and no noise, Bakone Malapa allows visitors to interact with residents,” she explained.

The day ended on a fun note as Koketso the Frog delighted the learners by dancing with them, wrapping up a memorable and educational visit.
