Elim locals protest over state of road
Frustrated Elim residents protest poor roads, water shortages, and power issues, demanding urgent action from authorities after years of delays.
LIMPOPO – Frustrated residents in the Elim area took to the streets on February 25, blocking several roads in protest over long-standing infrastructure issues.
The demonstration, supported by communities from Nthabalala, Elim, and Vleifontein, was driven by the government’s failure to fulfil promises of road upgrades, along with ongoing issues of water shortages and unreliable electricity supply.
Protesters specifically demanded the rehabilitation of the D4 from N1 to Elim and the D2677 from Vleifontein to Nthabalala, referring to the deteriorating conditions as a daily hazard. As the strike intensified, local schools closed, and workers struggled to reach their jobs, with limited taxi services and no buses operating.
Cedrick Khorombi, one of the protesters, expressed the community’s frustration. “We have been engaging with the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) and the Department of Public Works for years, yet no progress has been made. We are tired of broken promises. We want answers in writing from the MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure. Until we see real action, we will not back down.”
Taxi and bus owners also voiced their concerns, explaining that the poor road conditions are damaging their vehicles. “Our minibuses cannot withstand the potholes, and when it rains, the roads become nearly impossible to navigate. We need a proper road,” Khorombi added.
RAL communications manager, Luyanda Sithole, acknowledged the community’s concerns, citing budget constraints as a challenge. “The road rehabilitation will be carried out in two phases, starting from N1 to Malamulele. We remain committed to delivering quality road infrastructure for the people of Limpopo,” she confirmed.
