Lim SOPA 2025 highlights power, water, and agriculture investments

Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba reaffirmed her commitment to economic growth, infrastructure, and public services in the 2025 State of the Province Address.

POLOKWANE – The 2025 State of the Province Address (Sopa), delivered by the Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba at the Lebowakgomo Legislative Chambers, has ignited hope for improved service delivery and infrastructure development across the province.

Energy and infrastructure developments

To address Limpopo’s growing electricity demand, Ramathuba announced that 150km of a 220km, 400-kilovolt (kV) power line is under construction, connecting Medupi Power Station to Polokwane.

Additional 400kV power lines in Nzhelele, Borutho-Silimela, Foskor-Spencer, Foskor-Merensky, and Leseding are expected to be completed by 2029.

Water access and intervention strategy

While provincial access to water has declined to 64.2%, leaving 35.8% of citizens without reliable supply, a new water intervention strategy has been introduced.

A dedicated technical working group will oversee improvements, starting with Polokwane Municipality before rolling out across the province.

A water war room has also been established to support municipalities in addressing service delivery challenges.

Agriculture and job creation

The premier announced ambitious plans to expand macadamia and avocado farming through Senzi Avomacs Farming in Thulamela and Makgoba Afrika in Mopani.

Additionally, 37 vegetable projects across the province will receive irrigation system support, benefitting cooperatives such as Tanani, Matiko Disabled & Multipurpose, Modikwa Farming, Mohlakamosome Cooperative, Nwanedi Ablution and Mazeli.

In response to calls for agro-processing facilities, a yoghurt processing plant in Polokwane and a beef abattoir in Mookgophong will soon be constructed, creating employment and boosting local agricultural exports.

Healthcare and academic advancements

The construction of Limpopo’s Central Academic Hospital has surpassed 23% completion.

Once finished, the facility will provide specialised medical treatments, enhance clinical training for medical students, and contribute to medical research and innovation.

With these initiatives, Ramathuba reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to economic growth, infrastructure development, and improved public services, setting a strong foundation for the future of Limpopo.
