Polokwane hosts first World Down Syndrome Day Buddy Walk
Join Polokwane's first World Down Syndrome Day Buddy Walk on March 21 to promote inclusion, raise awareness, and support.
POLOKWANE – Join the inaugural World Down Syndrome Day Buddy Walk at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on March 21!
Organised by Dionne Davidson from the Polokwane Down Syndrome Outreach, this event aims to raise awareness and promote inclusion for individuals with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.
World Down Syndrome Day is observed globally on March 21 under the theme ‘Improving our support systems’.
Davidson said there is a need for greater awareness in the province, and encouraged the community to participate in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The event seeks to challenge misconceptions and highlight the abilities of individuals with Down Syndrome.
Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) states that this global awareness day advocates for inclusion, recognition, and better support systems. Davidson stressed the importance of seeing the ability rather than the disability, ensuring meaningful opportunities for all. She spoke about common misconceptions, such as the belief that individuals with Down Syndrome cannot learn or work, explaining that with proper resources and support, many excel academically and professionally.
Leading up to the event, a World Down Syndrome Symposium will be held online from March 17-19, featuring experts in healthcare, education, employment, and self-advocacy. Login details can be found on the Down Syndrome Support South Africa Facebook page.
One of this year’s key projects focuses on helping individuals with Down Syndrome secure employment. Businesses with vacancies are encouraged to contact the organisation for candidate profiles.
The event will also feature the annual Crazy Socks campaign, encouraging participants to wear colourful socks to spark conversations about Down Syndrome awareness.
Activities at the Buddy Walk include a safe walk around the track, jumping castles, stalls, an egg-and-spoon race, and raffles. The event runs from 08:00 to 12:30, with an entrance fee of R20, while toddlers and persons with Down Syndrome can attend for free.
