Vhembe sports commentator scouts for new talent

Khuliso Tshishonga launches a campaign to discover and mentor the next generation of sports commentators from the region.

LIMPOPO – Vhembe sports commentator Khuliso or ‘Joy n G Matter’ Tshishonga of Gogobole has embarked on a campaign to scout for new sportscasters.

Tshishonga does his work as a commentator for free, he says, as this is his passion. He pointed out that a well-developed, strong, clear and personable voice is also important as a voice is the factor that entertains fans for extended periods of time.

“As a sports commentator, one is expected to recount sporting events for the news, perform interviews off the field and use social media. An understanding of the various sporting disciplines and athletes is crucial too. We furthermore provide analysis of sporting events.”

He said he was inspired by the radio commentary of Phalaphala’s FM Sydney Mashige, Baba Nthethwa and Reggie Ndlovu from Supersport TV, but that the journey has not always been easy.

“I always pushed myself to do my best, and I am not afraid to face new challenges in life. I also accept constructive criticism, and this makes me popular with my listeners. What I like about being a sports commentator is that it is friendly and we interact with different officials and soccer players. One thing I’ve learnt is that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two in your interaction with the public,” he said. “The world of commentators is evolving daily and we have to learn new things that come in every now and then.”

He said his campaign is driven towards unearthing the next generation of sports commentators with a focus on polishing gems from different area around Vhembe.
