Pretoria cop arrested near Polokwane with drugs worth R85k

A Silverton cop was found in possession of nyaope sachets and a suspected stolen car when his vehicle was intercepted at the Shell Ultra City outside Polokwane on Wednesday.

POLOKWANE – A police constable (44) attached to the Silverton Police Station’s detective component will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of dealing in drugs and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The officer was arrested on the N1 South yesterday afternoon (March 19) after he was found in possession of 2 095 sachets of nyaope worth approximately R85 000 and a suspected stolen motor vehicle with Gauteng number plates.

Police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the vehicle was intercepted near Shell Ultra City during an intelligence-driven operation by the provincial Anti-Smuggling Unit and Tshimollo private security.

“The officer’s service pistol was also confiscated during the arrest. He was detained at the Westenburg Police Station,” Ledwaba said.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the swift arrest and issued a stern warning that any police officer who chooses to break the law will face severe consequences.

“The arrest of this officer should send a clear warning that no one is above the law.”
