Major roadworks on the R101: What motorists need to know
The Polokwane Municipality has announced major road upgrades on the R101 from March to June 2025. Here's what you need to know.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality says it is taking significant steps to enhance road infrastructure to improve safety and driving conditions.
Vital upgrades will be carried out on the R101 between the Nelson Mandela Intersection and Meropa Traffic Lights, with the works expected to last between March until the end of June 2025.
“Key upgrades include full road repairs between the Nelson Mandela Intersection and Orpen Road, base layer recycling and a 30mm asphalt resurfacing project between Orpen Road and Meropa,” a statement reads.
The municipality adds that new precast concrete kerbs will be installed to improve drainage, while the stormwater system will undergo maintenance to prevent flooding.
“Road markings and signage will also be updated to ensure clearer navigation for drivers. These improvements are essential for ensuring smoother and safer travel for all road users, providing long-term durability to the road surface and reducing maintenance disruptions in the future,” it said.
The roadworks will affect all access roads to the R101 as well as nearby areas including:
- Northern Muslim School
- Polokwane Snake & Reptile Park
- N1 Padel/Adventure Park
- Enderum College
- Limpopo Tourism Agency.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible and to reduce speed near construction zones for their safety.
