GNT halts services in Moletjie amid safety concerns
Commuters from Moletjie and surrounding areas now face the challenge of finding alternative transport to work after GNT halted services to the area citing safety concerns.
POLOKWANE – Great North Transport (GNT) has halted its services in Moletjie following a series of attacks on its buses, drivers and passengers.
Commuters from Moletjie, Seshego and surrounding areas now face the challenge of finding alternative transport to work, especially for those travelling to and from the city.
The suspension, announced last week, is indefinite and affects all routes within Moletjie and its neighbouring regions.
The decision to stop operations was made due to escalating safety and security concerns, according to GNT chief operating officer, Mahlako Mogoashane.
He explained that the company had faced repeated targeted attacks on its leased buses, which had put the lives of drivers and passengers at risk.
“Our buses are being stoned, our drivers harassed, and our passengers placed in harm’s way. We cannot, in good conscience, continue operations under such dangerous conditions. The safety and well-being of our passengers and staff remains our highest priority.”
GNT urged passengers to make alternative transport arrangements and assured them that updates would be provided regularly. The company also clarified that operations on other routes remained unaffected by the suspension.
The disruption comes as a setback for GNT, which has been working to expand its services and restore essential bus routes to underserved communities.
As part of its empowerment strategy, GNT had recently begun leasing buses from local small operators to support emerging transport businesses across Limpopo.
Mogoashane stated that the company was in urgent discussions with relevant stakeholders, including the taxi industry and law enforcement, to resolve the situation peacefully.
“We sincerely apologise to our loyal passengers for this inconvenience and remain committed to resuming operations as soon as conditions allow,” he said.
The company reiterated its commitment to ensuring passenger safety and reliable transportation and pledged to collaborate with authorities and industry partners to safeguard its fleet, employees and customers.
