Polokwane hosts first World Down Syndrome Buddy Walk
The Buddy Walk aims to promote inclusion and awareness through fun activities and the theme of support systems.
POLOKWANE – The inaugural World Down Syndrome Day Buddy Walk took place at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Friday, celebrating the global awareness day with fun activities and games.
The event aimed to raise awareness and promote inclusion for individuals with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. This year’s theme, ‘Improving Our Support Systems’, was central to the day’s celebrations.
The Buddy Walk was organised by Dionne Davidson from the Polokwane Down Syndrome Outreach, in partnership with Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA), which advocates for inclusion, recognition, and better support systems for those with Down Syndrome. Davidson highlighted the need for increased awareness in Limpopo, aiming to challenge misconceptions and highlight the abilities of individuals with Down Syndrome.
“There are still misconceptions that individuals with Down Syndrome cannot learn or work, but with proper resources and support, many excel academically and professionally,” she said, stressing the importance of focusing on ability rather than disability to ensure meaningful opportunities for all.
To further promote awareness, those present were encouraged to wear fun socks, sparking conversations and raising visibility for Down Syndrome.
