Cakes and Florals blooms into celebration brand

Rebecca Mangelo’s Cakes and Florals brings beautiful bakes and floral designs to Polokwane, blending passion and community upliftment.

POLOKWANE – What started as a passion for baking has grown into a thriving business for Rebecca Mangelo (46), the proud owner of Cakes and Florals. With a love for her craft, she not only creates stunning cakes and floral arrangements but also shares her skills with the community.

“We chose the name Cakes and Florals so customers immediately understand that we provide cakes and flowers for all occasions. That’s why our slogan ‘All Things Celebration,’ fell into place,” she said.

Rebecca honed her baking skills in Pretoria at Soetlief and Jasmyn Cake and Sugar Art classes, where she mastered the art of cake decorating.

She recalls an inspiring slogan from her training: “Anyone can decorate a cake, but it takes skill and practice to decorate the perfect cake. The novelty cake business offers a wonderful career, but it requires hard work.” These words, she said, have guided her journey.

She originally focused on event décor, but her wedding clients would often ask why she didn’t offer cakes and catering as well. Seeing an opportunity, she expanded her services to include wedding cakes, character cakes, milestone cakes, shower cakes, cupcakes, biscuits, muffins, scones, and more, along with flower arrangements for weddings and funerals.

Her journey from hobbyist to entrepreneur was seamless.

“I used to bake for leisure when hosting friends and family, so transitioning into business felt natural,” she told Polokwane Observer.
Her business isn’t just about cakes, but about community upliftment. She currently employs two young workers, helping them gain financial stability while encouraging them to further their studies.

“It’s fulfilling to know I’m providing opportunities for young people to support their families and grow professionally.” Beyond job creation, she also offers private baking lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to start their own cake businesses.

One of Rebecca’s greatest joys is the connections she has built with her customers.

“When you deal with many people, you often become more than just a baker. You turn into a counsellor, advisor or even a therapist. I love helping people create happy memories.”
