Vhembe mob justice condemned after man killed
Limpopo police condemn mob justice after a man accused of attempted rape was set alight by residents. Manhunt for suspects underway.
LIMPOPO – Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe strongly condemned a mob justice incident committed in the Vuwani policing area last Sunday.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the police were informed of an incident at Lwamondo, Tshalovha village and on their arrival, found the body of a man with severe burn wounds.
Preliminary investigations showed that the man had apparently been rounded up by community members after he allegedly attempted to rape an elderly woman.
The man, estimated to be in his mid-thirties, was set alight by a group of angry residents.
He was positively identified by his next of kin as Singo Tshifhiwa (37), believed to be a resident of Mabvete village near Tshiungani in Niani.
Hadebe has urged communities to resist the temptation of taking the law into their own hands, but instead to report all criminal activities to the police.
According to Mashaba, a manhunt is underway for the suspects of the crime, and anyone with information that can assist with their arrest should contact investigating officer Sgt Randzu Mabedle on 079 849 6309, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, their nearest police station or the MySAPSApp.
Police investigations continue.
