More charges loom for Mankweng teacher accused of rape

A 51-year-old Mankweng teacher accused of raping a 13-year-old learner will remain in custody as his case proceeds with more charges to be added against him.

POLOKWANE – More charges are to be added against the 51-year-old teacher facing the rape charges of a 13-year-old learner in Mankweng.

The accused appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on a rape charge on Friday, and had been kept in custody until today when the matter proceeded.

The names of the child, school and the accused are withheld in line with the law, due to the nature of the crime.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the charges were brought in terms of section 305 of the Children’s Act.

The man was reportedly tracked down on the order of provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe.

The crime is said to have taken place from November until March, and, and upon realising the matter was drawing public attention, the accused went on the run, Malabi-Dzhangi said.

“The suspect has been arrested following an extensive investigation by the detectives from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit,” Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hlulani Mashaba said.

Hadebe mentioned that they will ensure to have a watertight case to ensure that justice prevails in this matter.
