Nelspruit transport intern arrested for job scam in Limpopo
A Nelspruit intern was arrested in Limpopo for allegedly soliciting R6.5K per person in a fake traffic job scam. He appeared in court on corruption charges.
LIMPOPO – A 28-year-old intern at the Department of Transport in Nelspruit, Lutendo Makgoka, appeared before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Thursday facing charges of corruption.
His court appearance follows his arrest the previous day by the provincial anti-corruption unit in Limpopo.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hlulani Mashaba, Makgoka was apprehended after a complaint was lodged on April 1, alleging he was soliciting money from victims under false pretences.
He reportedly promised employment as traffic officers in exchange for a R6 500 fee per person.
The anti-corruption unit launched an enquiry and conducted a sting operation in the Thohoyandou policing area.
During the operation, Makgoka met with the victims and accepted payment. Police moved in and arrested him on the spot, recovering R2 000 in cash.
Mashaba confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with unit working alongside the DPCI serious corruption investigation unit in Musina.
Additional charges may be brought against the suspect as the case develops.
Makgoka’s case has been postponed to April 17 for a formal bail application.
