PEPPS learners address peer pressure through film
Gr 9 learners created a film tackling peer pressure and bullying, showcasing creativity and teamwork through storytelling.
POLOKWANE – PEPPS Polokwane College recently showcased one of its most exciting Creating Tomorrow projects, ‘Lights, Camera, and Learn’, where learners stepped into the world of filmmaking.
Taking on this innovative project, the Gr 9 learners were empowered to channel the power of storytelling through film to social issues like peer pressure and bullying.
The learners created the film, titled ‘ Buried Lies’ all by themselves, from the development of the idea, turning it into a storyline, the acting and editing into a film.
The film addresses issues such as peer pressure, how to handle it, and shows the consequences of succumbing to it.
Donald Chinwa, the head of this department, beamed with pride at the work done by the learners and explained that the project truly embodied what Creating Tomorrow is all about by allowing learners to analyse information objectively, solve the problems that they encountered during the making of the film and working as a team.
“The learners used art to address the issues faced by their peer group. Children these days have a different set of challenges to what we had growing up that they go through and succumbing to things like peer pressure can have dire consequences. It’s important to be honest with oneself,” he said.
He added that the Lights, Camera, and Learn project proved to be one of the most successful learning experiences, highlighting the potential of young filmmakers to create awareness through the art of storytelling.
