Edu MEC opens modern schools in rural Limpopo

LIMPOPO – Communities in Xikundu and Xigamani were filled with joy as the MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, alongside Vhembe Mayor Freda Nkondo and Collins Chabane Mayor Gezani Shadrack Maluleka officially opened two newly upgraded schools – one at John Xikundu and the other Tshamiseka Primary School.

The comprehensive infrastructure projects form part of the Department of Education’s ongoing mission to create safe, dignified and conducive learning environments, especially in rural areas. The transformation at both schools included demolishing outdated structures, constructing modern classrooms, new office blocks, and installing proper sanitation facilities. These improvements not only enhance the learning environment but also restore a sense of pride within the communities.

Maluleke expressed his appreciation: “This kind of infrastructure is rare in rural areas. MEC, you’ve made it easier for the people of Collins Chabane to access quality education right here in the villages. We will treasure and protect these state-of-the-art schools.” In addition to the school openings, Maluleke also donated school shoes to learners at 12 schools during his birthday last month.

Department spokesperson Mike Maringa highlighted the significant progress made since 1994. “The people of Xigamani have witnessed the transformation from mud schools to modern facilities. We may not have achieved everything yet, but we are far better than yesterday.”

Traditional leader Hosi Bohani Shigamane called the handover “a historic moment,” saying that the MEC “is the first provincial leader to visit the village on official business”. “Now our children can focus on learning instead of fearing old, crumbling buildings,” he said.

The opening ceremony coincided with the MEC’s birthday, adding a personal touch to a day that marked real progress for rural education in Limpopo.
