Northview learner writes her fifth book at 12

Vhudi Tshivhuyahuvhi, inspired by J.K. Rowling, has handwritten and illustrated five books, sharing her love for storytelling.

POLOKWANE – At just 12 years old, Vhudi Tshivhuyahuvhi is proving that it’s never too early to follow your dreams.

A passionate admirer of British author J.K. Rowling, who wrote her first story at six but was only published at 32, Vhudi is blazing her own trail by writing and illustrating her own books. A learner at Northview Christian Academy, Vhudi recently completed her fifth book. Each one is entirely handwritten and features her own illustrations.

“My biggest challenge is writing the words big enough to be read, but small enough to fit on the page. Spelling can also be tricky at times,” she told Review.

Although she only started writing last year, Vhudi admits she still feels nervous about how others might respond to her work. “I shiver inside every time someone reads my stories, but my friends love them, and one of my sisters encourages me a lot. My teachers are a big source of inspiration for my stories.”

Her creativity is supported by friends, too. “My friend Diarabilwe Makgopo loved one of my books and even helped with some of the illustrations,” she said. Despite the nerves, Vhudi has grown more confident in her abilities. “I’ve learnt that I can write good stories and that I shouldn’t be afraid of what others think.” She’s already hard at work on her next book “It’s about a high school graduation”. Her message to fellow young writers is clear: “Use your creativity, and don’t let negative comments bring you down.”

Looking to the future, Vhudi dreams of having her books published professionally. “I love reading, and one day I’d like to sit around a table and have a conversation with J.K. Rowling.”
