Prominent Limpopo DJ arrested for alleged sexual assault of relative (6)

A Thohoyandou DJ has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor relative, with court proceedings to resume on 27 May.

LIMPOPO – A 34-year-old radio personality from the Vhembe District was arrested on Monday (May 19) for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old relative at her home in Mpheni Block B, outside Elim in the Waterval policing area.

Limpopo police said the suspect, a DJ at a Thohoyandou-based radio station, was arrested following an investigation led by detectives from the Waterval police and briefly appeared in the Waterval Magistrate’s Court yesterday (May 20). The case was postponed to May 27 for a formal bail application.

The Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba said the alleged assault occurred on May 12 at around 15:30.

“The girl’s mother, who was in Pretoria at the time, was notified by the child’s grandmother that the minor was unwell. Upon returning home immediately, she learned that the child had already been taken to hospital, where medical examination confirmed sexual assault,” his statement read.

During interviews with the authorities, the child reportedly revealed that the suspect had shown her inappropriate material before committing the alleged assault.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed grave concern over the incident.

“It is deeply disturbing when those entrusted to protect our children become the very perpetrators who harm them. The suspect’s status as both a public figure and family member makes this case particularly troubling,” said Hadebe.

“I want to assure the community that the SAPS takes crimes against children extremely seriously, regardless of who the suspect is,” she added.

The suspect will next appear in court on May 27 for a formal bail application.
