Thohoyandou police hunt escaped prisoner

Police have launched a manhunt after 34-year-old awaiting-trial prisoner Muluvhu Gumani escaped custody while being transported.

POLOKWANE – Police in the Vhembe District have launched a manhunt for a 34-year-old awaiting-trial prisoner, Muluvhu Gumani, who escaped lawful custody on Monday morning (August 25).

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says Gumani had been arrested on charges of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.

“According to preliminary reports, police were transporting 13 awaiting-trial prisoners to the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court when the incident occurred. It is alleged that while the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light intersection, Gumani forced open the door and fled on foot. Police immediately launched a search operation but have not yet located him.”

Authorities have appealed to members of the public not to attempt to apprehend the suspect themselves, as this may endanger their safety.

Instead, anyone with information on Gumani’s whereabouts is urged to contact Detective Captain Sydney Dama on 082 469 1035, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app.

Police investigations are continuing.
