Man charged with murder of University of Venda student

Police arrested a 20-year-old man after his girlfriend was found dead in a campus residence room following an alleged altercation between the two.

LIMPOPO – A 20-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday (September 1), in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old female University of Venda student.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba,  on Friday (August 29), Thohoyandou VISPOL officers responded to a complaint at the university’s student residence.

“Upon arrival, security personnel directed them to a room where they discovered the body of a female student lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds to her upper body.”

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim, who were reportedly in a relationship, had been involved in a heated altercation inside the suspect’s room before neighbours heard screams,” says Ledwaba.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but the victim succumbed to her injuries.

Ledwaba further confirmed that the suspect attempted to escape by jumping from the third-floor window, sustaining injuries in the process. He is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard ahead of his court appearance.
