33 Limpopo learners hospitalised in food poisoning incident
The Limpopo Department of Education is investigating a food poisoning incident at Mahuntsi Secondary School that left 33 learners hospitalised.
LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Education is investigating a food poisoning incident at Mahuntsi Secondary School in Malamulele after 33 learners were hospitalised after allegedly consuming food from hawkers.
The department’s Mosebjane Kgaffe said the incident occurred yesterday (September 2) when learners reported symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea after allegedly buying food from vendors operating near the school.

“The affected learners were immediately given care, and their parents were notified. Of the 33 learners who were rushed to the hospital, one has since been discharged, while the other 32 were kept overnight for observation,” their statement read.
Kgaffe said the school administration has taken swift action in response to the incident which includes:
- The immediate suspension of hawkers operating near the school.
- Ongoing medical support for the affected learners.
- Engagement with parents and stakeholders on food safety.
“The health and safety of learners are our top priority. Officials from the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) are on-site checking the school’s food storage and utensils to determine the source of the contamination and prevent future incidents,” his statement read.
