WATCH: Polokwane Municipality confirms Hawks search and seizure

A search and seizure by the Hawks is unfolding at the Polokwane Municipality with documents taken from the municipal manager’s office. Watch an exclusive interview with the municipal spokesperson on the matter.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality has confirmed that members of the Hawks are currently conducting a search and seizure at the municipal manager, Thuso Nemugumoni’s office.

Initial reports on social media on Tuesday evening suggested that the raid was carried out at the office of the Mayor, John Mpe and while this was confirmed by the Hawks, the municipality has in the meantime clarified that the operation is taking place at the municipal manager’s office instead.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala, in an exclusive interview with the Polokwane Review-Observer, said members of the Hawks are currently in meetings with the administration as part of the process.

“The municipality will continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies,” he said, adding that there is a warrant in place for the search and seizure.

Selala says the documents in question were prepared by the municipality itself and provided to the Hawks.

“The municipality has proactively opened cases relating to material irregularities and we want to assure the public of full transparency following the outcomes of the investigation,” he said.

Asked what material irregularities he was referring to, Selala declined to elaborate, only saying that reports on internal investigations would be submitted to council.
