Emergency teams respond after building collapses in Mankweng

Emergency teams are on scene after the Student Store in Mankweng Complex collapsed earlier today.

POLOKWANE – A shop known as the Student Store, located in the Mankweng Complex, has collapsed under unclear circumstances earlier today.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the incident left one person dead.

The same shop caught fire in July last year, but the cause of today’s collapse remains unknown at this stage.

A large section of a single-story brick building has collapsed into a pile of rubble under a bright blue sky, with emergency vehicles (including a white Toyota bakkie and an ambulance) and personnel standing near the site.

Police and emergency medical services are currently on the scene and officials have cordoned off the area while search and rescue operations continue.

Unconfirmed reports from witnesses suggest that some community members and students attempted to loot food items from the collapsed building before law enforcement intervened.

Authorities are urging the public to stay clear of the area to allow emergency teams to work safely.

This is a developing story.
