Petrol price hike ahead for December: What motorists should know

Higher global oil prices and a weakening rand mean petrol and diesel prices are expected to rise in December.

POLOKWANE – South African motorists are in for a tougher time at the pumps next month as petrol and diesel prices are expected to climb ahead of the festive season.

According to mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), the local fuel market is showing “negative recoveries.”

That’s industry speak for when the cost of fuel rises but drivers don’t yet get relief from previous drops.

Higher global oil prices and supply pressures are also largely to blame.

What the increases might look like:

If current trends hold, motorists could see:

An increase for Petrol 93 of about 14c per litre.

An increase for Petrol 95 of roughly 19c per litre.

Much larger jumps for diesel: around 68c per litre for the 0.05% grade, and 82c per litre for the 0.005% grade.

Illuminating paraffin may rise by about 73c per litre.

Motorists, however, should note that these are just estimates and that the final adjustment will be confirmed by the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources just days before the change takes effect.

While the increase may not be enormous, it’s wise to plan ahead, especially if you are set to go on holiday and travel.

If you’re a business that relies on diesel or petrol, factor the higher cost into your pricing or delivery planning.
