Duo arrested for murder after victim dies at Westenburg police station

The Westenburg police arrested two men after a man they allegedly chased and assaulted died at the station on Sunday afternoon.

POLOKWANE – Two men, aged 22 and 25, have been arrested for murder after allegedly assaulting a man who later died at the Westenburg Police Station yesterday afternoon (November 23).

According to the Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba, the chain of events began earlier the same day when one of the suspects opened a case of theft after claiming that his cellphone and cash were stolen at a tavern on Witklip Street in Ladanna.

Instead of waiting for police to investigate, the man and another suspect allegedly took matters into their own hands.

Police say the pair drove to Ga-Kipi along the Dendron road, where they believed they would find the person responsible.

“Preliminary reports suggest the suspects located the man, chased him down and assaulted him before bringing him, already severely injured, to the Westenburg Police Station. Officers immediately called Emergency Medical Services, but paramedics declared the victim dead on arrival. His identity has not yet been confirmed,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said witness statements have been obtained, which will assist in piecing together what happened before the victim was brought to the station.

“The two suspects were arrested on the spot and are expected to appear in the Polokwane District Court tomorrow (November 25) on a charge of murder.

Investigations are ongoing.
