5 Killed in horror N1 crash near Makhado
Five people have died and more than twenty injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the N1 near Louis Trichardt. The road remains closed for investigations.
LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed a fatal multi-vehicle collision on the N1 North near Makhado, where five people lost their lives this afternoon (Friday, November 28).
Five vehicles involved
The crash occurred next to Binlavin farm, approximately six kilometres from the town of Louis Trichardt.
The incident involved five vehicles: two trucks, a sedan, a bakkie, and a 22-seater bus. According to preliminary findings, excessive speed and loss of control led to a head-on impact.
Emergency responders and traffic officials rushed to the scene, where five people were declared dead. Fifteen others sustained minor injuries, while an additional seven people were slightly injured.
Police, emergency services, and local authorities remain on site to manage the scene and support ongoing operations.
Road closed as emergency teams respond
Due to the severity of the crash, the N1 North has been closed to all traffic. The road will remain closed until the wreckage is cleared and initial investigations are completed.
MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed deep shock following the tragedy.
“On behalf of the Department, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families of those who perished on the scene and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” she said.
Department urges vigilance on the N1
The Department has reiterated its warning to motorists to remain vigilant on the N1, noting that the preliminary report points to loss of control and overspeeding as contributing factors.
