Two arrested on N1 for possession of explosives

Two foreign nationals were arrested on the N1 near Polokwane after police found bags of illegal explosives worth R2.5m during a stop-and-search.

POLOKWANE – Police officers from Polokwane SAPS International Airport have arrested two foreign nationals, aged between 45 and 50-years-old, after they were found in possession of illegal explosives during routine crime-prevention operations on the N1 North outside Polokwane early this morning (Friday, November 28).

The officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation targeting illegal activities in the Capricorn District when they pulled over a vehicle towing a trailer with Gauteng registration plates.

The vehicle, travelling from Zimbabwe and headed for Johannesburg, was carrying two occupants, including the driver.

During the search, police discovered and confiscated seven bags of explosives, 2 150 connector fuses, 40 detonator cords and 247 blaster cartridges, with an estimated street value of R2.5 million.

The suspects were arrested on the spot, and both the explosives and the vehicle – including the trailer – were seized as part of the investigation.

The two men are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where they will face charges of unlawful possession of explosives.

Police investigations remain ongoing.
