Taxila teen finalist champions youth empowerment

Taxila learner Mmakgoši Makgato, a Miss Limpopo Teen 2026 finalist, drives youth empowerment through literacy, outreach, and community advocacy.

POLOKWANE – Taxila Secondary School Gr 10 learner Mmakgoši Makgato (15) was recently selected as a Miss Limpopo Province Teen 2026 finalist.

She told Review that she is honoured to have been chosen for the pageant. “I’m motivated by a strong sense of dedication and community spirit. I have chosen to use this platform to address critical societal issues affecting the youth of South Africa.”

Makgato believes in addressing the root causes of youth challenges rather than treating only their symptoms. “My journey as a debater has highlighted the importance of staying informed about both global and local matters and made me aware of the profound consequences of illiteracy.”

Recognising this, she partnered with the Radical Youth Campaign to support its annual provincial primary school debate competition, helping to nurture critical thinking and literacy among young learners. Throughout her journey, she has taken part in numerous community outreach initiatives.

One meaningful project involved collaborating with professional nurse Senama to educate Gr 6 and Gr 7 girls at Nirvana Primary School about female hygiene. “During this initiative, we provided sanitary emergency kits to help support their well-being.”

Through her school, she also donated three boxes of sanitary towels to Ramogobe Primary School in Moletši, supporting young girls in need, and she has also motivated Gr 7 learners at her former school, Nirvana Primary School, and worked with the sports, arts and culture office to encourage participation in extracurricular activities.

Makgato believes that her voice is one of her strongest tools for driving positive change.

“I strive to inspire courage and wisdom among the youth by sharing my message on platforms such as Energy FM and Gateway FM. Through these channels, I hope to motivate others to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams.”

As she continues her journey as a Miss Limpopo Province Teen 2026 finalist, Makgato says she remains committed to making a difference. “I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me. Your guidance has been invaluable.”

Looking ahead, she is inspired to broaden her impact by launching new initiatives to empower more young people, especially girls, to dream boldly and believe in their abilities.

“I intend to strengthen my collaborations with local organisations, schools and media platforms to promote education and self-confidence among the youth,” she said.

Anne Mametja

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
