Water cuts hit Polokwane as Krugerburg reservoirs reach crisis levels

Several Polokwane suburbs face overnight water outages as reservoirs drop to critically low levels and repair teams tackle new leaks.

POLOKWANE – Large parts of the city are expected to experience water interruptions overnight as the Polokwane Municipality battles critically low reservoir levels, new leaks, and system pressure failures across several suburbs.

In a public notice, the municipality confirmed that Krugerburg Reservoirs F and D have dropped to critically low levels, with water demand exceeding available supply.

“To prevent a full system collapse, officials will shut reservoir outlets between 22:00 and 04:00 to allow the two reservoirs to recover. The temporary nightly shutdown is essential to stabilise the system and maintain supply during the day to the affected suburbs, which include Bendor, Coke, Fauna Park, Flora Park, Moregloed, SAB and Serala View,” said municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala.

Several other areas are also experiencing separate water challenges:

• Mohlasedi Park, Legae la Batho and Rethabile Gardens are receiving water from the Sand River Manganese Plant but are currently battling low pressure and dry taps in some sections.
• Nirvana, particularly Orient Street, is affected by a pipe burst.
• Penina Park, Ivy Park and Ivydale experienced a major leak repair overnight, but a new leak has since been discovered further down the line and repair teams are on site.

Selala said estimated restoration times remain unknown as investigations and repair work are ongoing.

Residents are urged to use water sparingly during the recovery period.

“The municipality sincerely appreciates residents’ patience, cooperation and understanding as we work to resolve these challenges with urgency,” his statement read.
